Leaving Ballina, take the N59 to Crossmolina, a pretty town under the shadow of Nephin. After exploring the attractions of the town and district, travel on towards Lahardane. About 3km from Crossmolina, a road to the left leads to Enniscoe House, a local heritage centre which also provides a genealogical service. Travel on towards Lahardane which is located at the foot of the towering quartzite dome of Nephin Mór ( 806 metres ), the second highest mountain in Connacht. Continue towards Pontoon and take a left turn at and you will pass through the centre of the lovely ' lake district ' with Lough Conn to the left and Lough Cullin to the right. There are a number of walking trails in the Pontoon area. After passing Lough Cullin, a road to the right will take you to Foxford ( the one to the left leads back to Ballina via the east shore of Lough Conn and Knockmore )

After visiting Foxford, take the road for Castlebar. See Straide ( past the church ) and visit the friary, the Michael Davitt Museum and his grave in the adjoining cemetery. Resuming the tour, you reach N5 at Ballyvary and turn left for Swinford, on the way visiting Bohola and Meelick round tower. You can stay on the N57 and travel back to Ballina through Foxford and Knockmore, or take an alternative route to the right about 1km past Callow Lakes. Then travel to Ballina, passing by Carrowkeribly Lake on the right. Just past the lake, a road to the right leads into the attractive parish of Attymass, at the south west of the Ox Mountains. This is the birthplace of Fr. Patrick Peyton ( 1909-1992 ) who became known around the world as the ' rosary priest '. On returning to Ballina, you can take a scenic journey on the R294 through Bonniconlon, the Ox Mountains and on to Lough Talt ( about 3km past the Mayo / Sligo border and 20km from Ballina ) before returning to base. This drive is approx 135km ( 84 miles )
