Strandhill is a beautiful seaside resort situated 5 miles (8krn) west of Sligo town in the heart of Yeats Country. It nestles between Knocknarea Mountain and the Mantic Ocean. The great Mantic rollers provide spectacular surfing - bringing surfers from all over Ireland. However the beach is not safe for swimming.

Knocknarea Mountain (1,078 ft) dominates the peninsula, and the cairn on the summit is the legendary burial place of Queen Maeve of Connacht.

After visiting Strandhill continue along the R292 and take a left turn signposted 'scenic route'. This brings you uphill to some panoramic views over Ballysadare Bay. Along this narrow road (at a bend in the road) is a signpost for Queen Maeves Cairn at the top of Knocknarea Mountain. A path from the car-park leads to the summit - allow 90 minutes to 2.5 hours for this walk which offers wonderful views of the countryside.

Next stop is Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery one of Europe's most important prehistoric cemeteries. A restored cottage houses an interesting exhibition relating to the site.
